This past Friday, the 3rd October – The SABC has re-affirmed its media partnership with The South African Traditional Music Achievement (SATMA) Awards due to take place at the University of Fort Hare in Alice, Eastern Cape on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th October 2014. The theme this year is my “Freedom is My Heritage” which coincides with the 20th anniversary of South Africa’s democracy.
This year again the SATMA’s have been split into two days on Friday the event will host 99% Indigenous Comedy Show and the main music awards ceremony on Saturday evening. SABC’s spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago says,” As the country’s only public service broadcaster, the SABC continuously strives to empower the local music industry through its 18 Radio Stations and 3 TV channels. Music be it traditional, Jazz, Gospel, Choral Music or any genre plays a crucial role in the promotion of the culture of South Africa’s people. The SATMA Awards offers an opportunity to the SABC to continue showcasing the countries music cultural diversity. Music occupies a central place in the SABC’s programming”.
The SATMA Awards Founder Dr. Dumisani Goba promised that the SATMA Awards will continue to honour and preserve South Africa’s culture and heritage through its support of the arts. He commented, “the support of our Heritage still doesn’t receive the financial support that it requires or deserves. Musicians should be living the same profile and financial lives as their sporting counter parts such as soccer stars”. He further challenged government and associated Arts and culture departments to put their financial muscles behind programs that support the upliftment of Traditional Music in its support of Culture and Heritage.
There are 3 new categories introduced for the SATMA’S 2014, being Best Vernacular Local Movie, Most Downloaded Song and Radio Station of the year. South Africa’s top artist and song writer Ntando Bangani is still The SATMA Awards Ambassador for 2014. SABC personalities that will grace the event include: Phindile Ngwala (SABC 2 Muvhango), Sinazo Yolwa (SABC 1 – Real goboza), Phila Madlingozi (SABC 1- Mutual Friends), Zizo Beda (SABC 1 Selimathunzi/ Umhlobo Wenene) and Rufus Leremi (SABC 1- ILifestyle)
SABC’s involvement at the SATMA Award’s this year entails the following:
Umhlobo Wenene fm and Tru fm – will do Live Broadcasts and Live Crossings from the venue , in Alice Fri 17 and Sat 18 October 2014.
- Live Crossings by all SABC Radio Stations to Umhlobo Wenene FM & Tru FM for an update on the day of the SATMA AWARDS event.
- Interviewing SATMA AWARDS Winners during and post Award Ceremony by SABC Radio Stations relevant to the Winners, e.g. Best Ndebele Album Winner to be interviewed by IKwekwezi FM.
SABC 1- Selimathunzi will film on 17th and on 18th October and will do the red carpet and ROOTS will do the insert which will be broadcast on SABC 1 later.
SABC 1 will broadcast the SATMA AWARDS at a later date to be announced.
